Sky High: Repairing and Restoring Your Roof

Welcome to my blog, my name is Daisy. A few years ago, my husband and I purchased an old house which required a lot of work. We spent many weeks gutting the place and installing new flooring, painting the walls and clearing the garage space of junk. However, my favourite part of renovating the house was the roof. I loved climbing onto the roof to inspect the tiles, removing and recycling the broken ones and replacing the gaps with new tiles. I also learnt how to waterproof and maintain our roof so that we can avoid problems in the future. I started this blog to help others who are interested in carrying out restoration or repair work on the roof of their home.

Installing a Metal Roof on a Small House: Materials You Will Need

Hunter Prescott

A metal roof is durable and lightweight, which makes it ideal for a small house. However, if you are planning on installing a metal roof on your small house, you will need to invest in a few other materials before you begin work. Below is a guide to what you will need.

Insulation

Insulation performs two important jobs: it will make your home more energy efficient and will also help to prevent external noise from penetrating your property. There is a range of options when it comes to insulation. You could choose to spray the insulation into the loft space of your home, or you could install insulated panels or batting. If you want to save yourself the trouble of having to add insulation to your home once the roof has been installed, you should consider investing in pre-insulated metal roofing. These metal panels have a layer of insulation already attached to one side.

Flashing

Flashing is the name given to specially shaped pieces of metal that are designed to fit around parts of the roof that are not flat, such as chimneys and corners. If your small home isn't built using a standard design, you will need to have the roof assessed by a professional roofing service. They will be able to measure and manufacture the flashing you require.

Rubber Washers

Metal roofing requires self-tapping screws to hold it in place against the joist of your property. Self-tapping screws create a small hole in the surface of the metal as you screw them into place. Even though you can achieve quite a tight fit, there will still be a small opening between the screw and the metal roof. This tiny space could allow water to enter your home. You should place a rubber washer around the head of each screw before your insert it into the roof. Doing so will create a watertight seal.

Light Coloured Paint

Once you have installed the roof, you should consider its colour. Lighter coloured roofs reflect heat from the sun rather than absorbing it. By painting the roof of your small house a light colour, you can help to protect yourself from the heat of summer. If you do not fancy painting the roof yourself, you should order metal roof sheets that have been pre-painted.
